Meet the CAV Committee

The Companion Animal Veterinarians Branch is operated by an executive committee of up to nine veterinarians from around New Zealand. The committee has four meetings each year and supports the branch by providing opinions and expertise between meetings.

Being a member of the committee is an excellent means of professional development as well as a way to give back to the profession. Costs to attend meetings are covered by the branch, along with a locum fee. Members also receive NZVA Conference registration at student rates and a complimentary ticket to the annual CAV dinner.

You can get in touch with our committee by emailing cav@vets.org.nz.

Hi everyone, I’m Becky Murphy, President of the Companion Animal Veterinarians Branch (CAV). I run TCI GlenBred, a busy canine reproduction clinic in Feilding.

I represent companion animal veterinarians across several national and international groups, including the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) Hereditary Disease Committee and the New Zealand Police Dog Breeding Panel. In my CAV role, I also sit on the Companion Animals New Zealand (CANZ) Board and the Veterinary Council of New Zealand (VCNZ) Professional Standards Committee.

I’m passionate about advocating for the 'little guy', independent and/or niche veterinarians who bring huge value to our profession. When done responsibly and within the VCNZ Code of Professional Conduct, limited-service practice should strengthen the diversity and sustainability of veterinary care, not the opposite.

My other big focus is promoting health-led dog and cat breeding and redefining hereditary disease screening as preventative medicine for the yet-to-be-born patient, because real change starts before life even begins.
