Companion Animal Veterinarians

A thriving companion animal veterinary profession in New Zealand. We work towards this by promoting and supporting all aspects of companion animal veterinary practice.

We do this by:

  • providing continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities, including newsletters, webinars, grants and scholarships, the Companion Animal Veterinary Refresher Scheme, and allegiance with international veterinary organisations.
  • contributing our knowledge to relevant NZVA advocacy work and position statements
  • assisting the NZVA with queries that arise in everyday practice
  • recognising the outstanding work done by companion animal veterinarians with our Annual Service Award and life memberships
  • supporting projects that encourage responsible pet ownership and companion animal welfare by providing representation on the New Zealand Companion Animals Trust (NZCAT)
  • encouraging clinical veterinarians to pursue research that benefits their patients by supporting Healthy Pets New Zealand as a Research in Practice partner.

CAV membership is available for NZVA members as part of their annual subscription fee. There are a few ways you can sign up:

  • Choose CAV as one of your special interest branches (SIBs) when you join the NZVA or renew your membership.
  • Log into the NZVA website, view your profile and select the 'Subscriptions' tab. Click the 'Apply a subscription' button and select 'Companion Animal Veterinarians' from the dropdown menu.
  • Email if you have any questions.

NZVA member-only content

CAV is operated by an executive committee of up to nine veterinarians from around New Zealand. The committee has four meetings each year and supports the branch by providing opinions and expertise between meetings.

Being a member of the committee is an excellent means of professional development and a great way to give back to the profession. Costs to attend meetings are covered by the branch, along with a locum fee. Members also receive NZVA Conference registration at student rates and a complimentary ticket to the annual Companion Animal Veterinarians Dinner.
