NZVA mental health webinars
Support suggestions post Cyclone Gabrielle
In March 2023, Bridey White (RVN, BHlthSc, MHlthSc in progress) recorded a free webinar for veterinary professionals about achieving resilience and managing compassion fatigue and burnout.
Bridey joined Wildbase, Massey University in 2005, initially providing nursing and husbandry care for wildlife patients including animals affected by the 2011 MV Rena oil spill. In 2014, she joined the oil response team, supporting the delivery of Wildbase’s contractural obligations to Maritime New Zealand. Bridey has collaborated across schools and disciplines to publish research and better understand some of the complexities facing her profession.
In this webinar, Bridey covers:
- Compassion fatigue, burnout, moral distress and vicarious trauma
- What she learnt from the 2011 MV Rena oil spill
- Suggested mental health interventions used by human healthcare professionals
Psychological recovery after natural disasters
Many people are experiencing uncertainty, stress, anxiety, worry, fear and grief as a result of Cyclone Gabrielle and other recent extreme weather events.
To help you take care of yourself and your family, veterinary team and community, the NZVA recorded two free webinars with Clinical Psychologist Rajna Bogdanovic.
Rajna specialises in first responder mental health and disaster recovery and is a member of the Disaster Response Network in Australia. During the sessions, Rajna will share psychological skills and tools to help recovery and promote psychological resilience for the future.
We are extremely grateful to Rajna and the team at First Response Health for their generosity in supporting our veterinary community at this difficult time.
