The NZVA offers a range of micro-credentials for allied veterinary professionals (AVPs), allowing you to demonstrate your competency to perform specific tasks confidently with minimal supervision.

Edu-Badges are available for AVPs working with both companion and rural animals. These assessments provide proof that an AVP can complete a specific task with minimal supervision, while ensuring high standards of care and animal welfare. Edu-Badges currently available include:

  • dog intubation
  • clinical examination
  • infusion of teat sealant for dairy cattle (for seasonal teat-sealers)
  • intramammary administration for dairy cattle (for team leaders)
  • large animal vaccination technique

Veterinary authorisations are designed to provide veterinary technicians the skills, knowledge and authorisation to complete tasks using restricted veterinary medicines (RVMs). Our courses meet the criteria for training set by the Veterinary Council of New Zealand (VCNZ) and the Veterinary Professional Insurance Society (VPIS). Veterinary authorisations currently available include:

  • xylazine sedation of calves for disbudding

Strengthen your profession

NZVA members help shape the future of the veterinary profession. Through our advocacy work, we present a united voice, ensuring your interests are considered when it comes to matters relating to animals, humans and the environment.

Provide guidance and support to the next generation of veterinarians by becoming a mentor. Through the NZVET Mentoring Support programme, you can help veterinarians reach their full potential by sharing your knowledge, skills and experience. Mentorship is a great way to develop your professional skills and give back to the veterinary profession. You don’t have to be a veterinarian to be a mentor. All mentors have access to a free online course that highlights the important features of a successful mentoring relationship.

The NZVA is your voice. We work closely with our members, committees, special interest branches and Member Advisory Group (MAG) to advocate for the veterinary profession on matters you care about. We make sure your voice is heard and your interests are considered.

To ensure your voice is heard by the right people, we work with government and industry partners to inform public debate, opinion, legislation, regulations and policy relating to animals, humans and the environment. Key areas where we have advocated for the veterinary profession include:

  • changes to animal welfare codes
  • emergency response and disaster management
  • bringing overseas veterinarians into the country during COVID-19
  • the independent review of veterinary education in Australasia
  • exotic disease response
  • live exports
  • public confidence in veterinary teams
