New Code of Practice for Veterinary Radiation
We’ve recently learned the Office of Radiation Safety (ORS) released the new Code of Practice for Veterinary Radiation (ORS C9), which came into effect on 31st July 2020.
ORS C9 applies to all activities associated with the use and storage of irradiating apparatus and radioactive material for veterinary diagnosis and research.
This code:
- replaces two previous codes under the Protection Act that dealt separately with veterinary X-rays (CSP 21) and the administration of Iodine-131 for treatment of thyroid conditions in cats (CSP 11
- consolidates these requirements and covers the previous gap relating to the administration of other radioactive material such as Technecium-99m in equine veterinary practice
- sets out specific requirements for each type of equipment and training in appendices
- introduces a new requirement to document and verify the adequacy of shielding if shielding is required.
As part of the process for implementing the new codes, the ORS has indicated they will work with specific sectors to develop relevant guides for compliance. We anticipate working alongside them on developing a guide for the veterinary profession in the near future.
