Life members

Individuals who have provided exemplary service to the veterinary profession or the NZVA may be awarded complimentary life membership. Life membership is at the discretion of the NZVA Board. To apply for life membership, please email membership@vets.org.nz.

To become a member:

  • Go to nzva.org.nz/join/register
  • Log in to your NZVA account or create a new one
  • Select the relevant membership category
  • Complete the online form
  • Sit back and wait for our membership team to contact you!

If you pay for your own membership, we'll send you a membership renewal invoice in November. Your membership will auto-renew on 1 January, provided we’ve received payment.

If your employer pays for your membership, we’ll contact them with membership renewal instructions.

If you're a student, retired, or life member, your membership will auto-renew on 1 January.

We welcome applications from:

  • veterinarians registered with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand (VCNZ)
  • retired veterinarians
  • students attending Massey University’s School of Veterinary Science
  • non-veterinarians working in the veterinary industry

Explore our membership categories

The Veterinary Council of New Zealand (VCNZ) is the statutory body responsible for upholding veterinary standards. Veterinarians must be registered with VCNZ to practise in New Zealand. VCNZ is responsible for: 

  • setting professional standards for veterinarians in Aotearoa
  • maintaining the register of veterinarians in New Zealand
  • renewing Annual Practising Certificates (APCs)
  • managing complaints about veterinarians.

The New Zealand Veterinary Association Te Pae Kīrehe (NZVA) is a membership organisation representing nearly 70% of New Zealand veterinarians. NZVA membership is entirely optional. The NZVA: 

  • advocates on behalf of members
  • offers continuing professional development (CPD)
  • funds research through grants and scholarships
  • publishes a range of newsletters and publications
  • offers mental health and wellbeing support
  • develops recommended guidelines for members
  • provides advice and support to members
  • facilitates contact between MPI and veterinary professionals during disasters and emergencies
  • fosters a community of veterinary professionals.

We accept payments via credit card and direct debit for individual members. Invoices for both individuals and organisations are emailed as a link and can be downloaded or paid online via Win Cave.

You can: 

  • pay via credit card using the link provided in your invoice email
  • call us on 04 471 0484
  • refer to the NZVA bank account details, which appear at the bottom of every invoice.

If your membership is paid by your employer, please speak with them directly. We will coordinate the payment process with the organisation.

To make full use of your member benefits, you’ll need your NZVA log-in details. You’ll use the same email address and password to log in to: 

  • the NZVA website, where you can access clinical and professional resources, member discounts, forums, and more
  • SciQuest, where you can browse our archive of publications
  • VetScholar, our online CPD platform
  • our Events website, where you can register for upcoming CPD events
  • Vet Support, the go-to platform for wellbeing support.

Access your member benefits

Once your membership has been confirmed, you can select your SIBs.

When you log into the NZVA website for the first time, you’ll see a pop-up box where you can choose your primary SIB and select any further SIBs you’re interested in joining.

There is no additional fee to do this and you can view and edit your SIBs from your profile, or by contacting the NZVA.

Alternatively, you can: 

  • log into the NZVA website
  • click your name or profile picture in the top right corner
  • select ‘view your profile’ from the drop down menu
  • go to the 'Subscriptions' tab and click ‘Apply a subscription'
  • select the SIB you would like to join from the dropdown menu.

Associate members can only join the Veterinary Business Community.

Large Animal Veterinary Technicians (LAVTs) are automatically signed up for the LAVT Group when they register.

NZVA members are automatically added to their Regional Network. If you relocate, please email membership@vets.org.nz so we can update your Regional Network.
