Climate Care Programme launches in New Zealand!
Published on 6 October 2025.
Do you want to:
- improve the sustainability of your practice?
- attract more values-aligned staff?
- reduce operating costs in your business?
- create a better world for animals, people, and the environment?
Then the Climate Care Programme is for you!
Following the success of the Australian programme, we're excited to partner with Vets for Climate Action (VfCA), Vet Sustain UK, and VetSalus to release a version specifically created for New Zealand veterinary teams.
What is the Climate Care Programme?
This is an innovative, online toolkit designed to empower veterinary teams to take the lead on environmental sustainability. The Programme offers step-by-step support to:
- reduce water use
- manage veterinary waste
- improve energy efficiency and switch to renewable sources
- measure and reduce your clinic's carbon footprint
- make informed ethical procurement decisions
- minimise the environmental impact of anaesthetic gases, pharmaceuticals, disinfectants, and other chemicals.
Who created the Climate Care Programme?
The Climate Care Programme was created by a team of VfCA volunteers including veterinarians, veterinary nurses, sustainability engineers, and specialist tertiary educators in Australia.
Our very own Climate Change Ambassador, Jane Ough, has been working closely with VfCA to develop the New Zealand version, ensuring it contains up-to-date information relevant to clinics in Aotearoa.
We're also proud to partner with Vet Sustain UK and VetSalus to include access to Vet Sustain's Veterinary Carbon Calculator (New Zealand) with the Climate Care Programme.
How does the Climate Care Programme work?
The Climate Care Programme is self-paced, making it easy to implement practical solutions, even in a busy veterinary practice.
Veterinary clinics nominate a Climate Champion who completes the modules and shares their learning with the wider team.
The Programme is an NZVA-accredited professional development course that can be counted towards annual CPD requirements.
