VetSouth Equine, part of an 8-clinic veterinary group based in Southland, New Zealand, is looking for a qualified equine surgeon to join our equine team as our current surgeon nears retirement.
We operate from a purpose-built equine hospital facility on the edge of Invercargill in southern New Zealand. Our client population is approximately 40% standardbred racehorses, 5% thoroughbred racehorses and the remaining 55% sport and pleasure horses. The surgical caseload is currently light with approximately 50-65 standing and table surgeries per annum. There is growth potential in our horse population.
The applicant would split surgical duties with pre-purchase examinations, lameness work ups and other specialised procedures/examinations as well as ambulatory work.
The equine clinic is situated on 1.5 Ha of land on the edge of the Invercargill racecourse. We operate out of a recently developed barn with seven boxes along with adjacent paddocking. There are three separate day boxes and two treatment rooms with stocks in addition to the surgical suite. The site is shared with a recently renovated small animal clinic.
Our team consists of five equine veterinarians, with locum veterinarians often employed over the summer period. The team is supported by a team of three – four veterinary technicians. You would take part in a shared on-call roster. We take pride in being part of our local equine community and often sponsor equestrian events, give seminars and speak at pony clubs and racing cadet trainings.
Invercargill and the surrounding area are a lovely balance of local community whilst still having the conveniences of a larger town. Invercargill sits close to an abundance of New Zealand’s most beautiful natural landscapes in Fiordland, The Catlins and Central Otago – a wonderful playground for those interested in snow-based activities, hiking, camping, wine tasting and amazing food – something for everyone! Invercargill has great schools and childcare options and a great community network of social sports and activities.
A competitive renumeration package is available with a generous CPD allowance, NZVA membership, VCNZ registration costs covered by the practice and relocation and visa assistance if required.
We are very motivated to find the perfect candidate for our practice. If you're interested in discussing your next career move within the next 1-2 years, please reach out to tracy.hartley@vetnz.nz for a detailed job description and further conversation.
